Job Title: Corrections Health Nurse

Job Hours: 40 Hrs/Wk, position works variable hours, in a closed environment with no windows in a jail setting.
Salary: $24.63– $34.15 / hour
Description:  
       

Education:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a nursing program with course work in Public Health.

 

Experience:

Two years of responsible public health nursing, psychiatric nursing, emergency room nursing or corrections health nursing experience.

 

Substitution:  

An equivalent combination of experience and training, demonstrating the required knowledge and abilities, is qualifying.

 

Summary of Essential Duties:  

Provides nursing care, patient treatment, health care management and health education to inmates within the Lane County Correctional System.  Duties may include: responds to inmate health emergencies; plans and directs clinics or special programs within a correction setting; arranges or conducts health counseling ; explains basic concepts of prevention of disease and injury and promotion of mental and physical health; prepares and dispenses or provides for the dispensing of appropriate medication; takes samples of blood and other body substances; provides consultative services to other sections of the correctional facilities, as well as to other agencies; assesses health needs and evaluates medical requirements of inmates; trains facility staff in the use of basic emergency procedures and equipment; compiles and maintains comprehensive medical records; gives injections to inmate patients and follows case to assess results of injections; detects, treats and follows up on spread of communicable disease and provides educational services to assist in the prevention of diseases; performs related work, as required.

 

Knowledge of:  

Principles, practices and theory of nursing and its application in the correctional system; laws, rules and regulations governing the provision of nursing care; medications used in the treatment of patients in a correctional system and their physiological and psychological effects; treatment plans and proper nursing procedures; diagnostic tests and equipment used in the diagnosis of diseases and illnesses; community and national health standards and practices; illnesses and diseases associated with public health and the treatments; program and clinic operations, policies and protocols; practices, principles and policies of health education; examination and assessment techniques used to analyze a variety of health problems.

 

Ability to: 

Provide nursing care and treatments to inmates; administer, follow-up and monitor medications; establish, maintain and update medical records; determine the extent of injury and illness and provide appropriate treatment or refer for treatment; coordinate health care efforts with other individuals and institutions,; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; identify problems and generation of solutions; provide educational services to inmates and correctional staff; determine needs of the inmates, as prioritized within correctional health nursing services; examine inmates and assess their health status and suitability for various work programs.

 

Note: 

Possession of a current unencumbered license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Oregon is required at the time of appointment. Please attach a photocopy of your nursing license to your application. If applying online, you may scan your lisence and upload it as an attachment.

Employment for Corrections Health Nurse is contingent upon successful completion of:

  • Oral Interview:  All eligible candidates will be contacted by phone to schedule a date and time for an oral interview.  You must pass oral interview in order to continue in the hiring process.
  • Background Investigation:  A thorough background investigation will be conducted by a Lane County Sheriff’s Office background investigator.  Part of the background investigation will include a medical examination including drug screen and TB test.  You must pass the background investigation in order to continue in the hiring process.

 

Lane County Sheriff’s Office examples of minimum standards and disqualifying factors

The following are minimum standards and examples that may cause your rejection for consideration as an applicant with the Lane County Sheriff’s Office.  This list is not all inclusive but only covers some typical examples:

  • Must be 21 years of age by the date of appointment
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must be a high school graduate or have successfully passed G.E.D. equivalency test.
  • Must have valid Oregon Driver’s License at time of appointment.
  • Application and background information must be furnished completely, accurately, legibly, truthfully without deception, gross error or pertinent omissions.
  • Applicants convicted of felony crimes will not be considered to advance further in the process.
  • Conviction of DUII within last three years.
  • Conviction of some misdemeanor crimes may be cause for rejection.
  • Conviction of domestic violence.
  • Multiple arrests without conviction.
  • Multiple traffic accidents.
  • Multiple traffic violations (for example: three moving violations in the last twelve months may cause rejection).
  • Conviction of major traffic crimes within last three years.
  • Multiple bankruptcies or repeated failure to pay just debts.
  • History of habitual use of alcohol without proven rehabilitation, including driving under the influence.
  • History of drug sales or of drug use, including marijuana, methamphetamine, LSD, etc., without proof of satisfactory rehabilitation.
  • History of mental, psychological or personality disorders, to include threats of self-destruction or suicide.
  • History indicating a propensity for violence, assault or inability to control one’s temper and anger even under provoking circumstances.
  • History of physical or sexual abuse to family members.
  • History of multiple involvements in neighborhood disputes.
  • History of association with known criminals other than family members.
  • Any statement written or spoken that is verified to be untruthful.
  • Termination for cause or termination during probationary period from previous law enforcement or criminal justice employment.
  • History of any conduct that could reasonably be concluded would adversely affect the veracity, credibility, and/or ability to reach sound decisions and use good judgment in performance of duties.
  • History of injury or disability that may hinder ability to perform duties of a Corrections Health Nurse when reasonable accommodation cannot be made.
  • A personal history that would bring disrepute, embarrassment, or lack of public support to the Lane County Sheriff’s Office, if appointed.
  • Violation of department policies and/or procedures, rules and regulations after appointment to position.
  • Record over the past three years of excessive absenteeism or tardiness during your employment.
  • A history of job instability reflected by multiple changes in jobs and/or occupation over the past three years.
  • Failure to successfully complete or pass any portion of the selection process for this position, to include a no-hire recommendation by the department’s psychologist or psychiatrist.
  • Dishonorable discharge from military service for any of the reasons stated here.

Any applicant who is disqualified during our background process will not be considered for any position within the Lane County Sheriff’s Office for a period of two years from the disqualification date. 

 

Rejection for employment with our department does not preclude an applicant from applying for another position of employment with Lane County.
