Overview of the Recuitment and Selection Process at Lane County

Thank you for considering Lane County’s employment opportunities!

The majority of regular, seasonal and some extra-help positions are filled through a competitive process.  This competitive process generally requires the completion of both a Lane County employment application and a Supplemental Questionnaire.  Your employment application and supplemental questionnaire must be received by Lane County Human Resources as specified on the job announcement.  We do not fax or accept faxed application materials.

Some recruitments do not have a closing date.  Instead of closing date, they are designated as “open until filled”.  We encourage you to submit your employment application materials as soon as possible because Lane County reserves the right to close these types of recruitments at any time.

Job Openings
Positions with Lane County are posted each Sunday as vacancies occur, for occupations such as management, professional, clerical/accounting support, law enforcement, nursing, mental health, juvenile counseling, maintenance, engineering/surveying and programming/technical support, to name a few occupational fields.

Job Information, Recording Line and Internet Access
Recruitment announcements are posted in this office as well as various other sources and the Internet at www.lanecounty.org/jobs.  We strongly recommend that you use our online application system.

All jobs are listed on the County’s 24-hour voice mail job line at (541) 682-4473 (press option #1), which is updated weekly.  Human Resource staff is available to assist applicants with job counseling, providing information on recruitment processes, feedback on application and interview processes, or simply to answer general questions.  If you are interested in additional information regarding these services, please contact us at (541) 682-3665.

Who can apply?
Most jobs at Lane County are filled through an open and competitive process.  Everyone is welcome and encouraged to apply for Lane County employment.  In some cases, Lane County may only accept employment applications from eligible and internal County employees.  Internal jobs are clearly designated as such on the job announcement.

What happens with your employment application after a job closes?
Lane County receives a large number of employment applications for all job openings.  Expect to compete with many other well-qualified employment applicants.  All applications receive due consideration, in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and contractual agreements.  Because the application and supplemental questionnaire are the main tools used in the screening process, it is essential that all applicants read and follow instructions and supply the requested information as accurately and completely as possible.

Please note: résumés, cover letter, Curriculum Vitae, or other non-required information are not reviewed as part of the initial selection process, unless the job announcement specifically requests they be attached.

Steps in the Selection Process

A. The initial step in the selection process involves making sure that applicants have submitted all of the materials required, as specified in the recruitment announcement, application materials.  Incomplete applications are disqualified at this step in the selection process.

B. The next step in the selection process involves a thorough review of all of the applications remaining from Step A.  Human Resources staff utilizes information provided by each applicant on the actual employment application form for the purposes of ascertaining whether applications meet the minimum qualifications for the job.  Human Resources staff does NOT review the supplemental questionnaire, résumé, or cover letter.  Please be sure that your employment application form clearly and thoroughly articulates your relevant experience, education, skills, abilities, licenses for the specific job for which you are applying.  At this point in the selection process, some applications are disqualified for not meeting the minimum qualifications for the job.

C. Online applicants whose applications are no longer under consideration may be notified at this point in the selection process.  If you included an email address and applied online, you will be notified sooner of the status of your application.

D. The next step in the selection process involves the hiring department of Lane County.  Only the applications that met the minimum qualifications in Step B, above, are considered.  The next step involves ranking the supplemental questionnaires of the remaining applications.  The purpose of the supplemental questionnaire is to gather specific information about an applicant’s education and experience as it relates to the available position.  It is essential to be thorough on all answers to the supplemental questionnaire.  The department scorers do NOT review the employment application, résumé, or cover letter (in fact, most times scorers may not even see these documents).  Please be sure that your responses to the questions in the supplemental questionnaire clearly and thoroughly emphasize your relevant experience, education, skills, abilities, licenses for the specific job for which you are applying.

E. Once all applications have been scored, Human Resources staff ranks them according to the scores the supplemental questionnaires received during step D.  At this point, Human Resources staff ascertains which applicants will be contacted for interviews.  Please note that in some cases, due to contractual obligations with some of the Unions, only internal applicants may be interviewed.

F. The top candidates, as determined in step E, are contacted for interviews and/or further screening by the hiring department.  Note that in some cases additional testing may be required prior to, during, or after the interviews.  Applicants must pass those tests to remain eligible for employment.

G. Once an employment offer is extended and/or accepted the rest of the candidates who applied are notified.

H. Application Review Process and Notification
Competition for County positions is great. We will be reviewing many applications, and we ask for your patience in allowing us to thoroughly evaluate them.  Inquiries are not necessary and may only slow the process.  This process can take approximately about three weeks after the closing date, and sometimes longer.  To keep yourself informed on the status of your employment application please visit us on the web and review the “Status of Recently Closed jobs Section” http://www.lanecounty.org/Jobs/ or call our job line at (541) 682-4473 (press option #3).  If you need more specific information, you may call (541) 682-3665.

Equal Employment Opportunity
It is the policy of Lane County to adhere to the concept of Equal Employment Opportunity as a basic element of human resource management.  Discrimination on a basis unrelated to the job requirements of the position is prohibited.  Employment and promotion decisions shall comply with state and federal law.  State and/or federal law specifically prohibits discrimination in privileges of employment, except where it constitutes a bona fide occupational qualification.

Americans with Disabilities Act
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability.  If you think you will need a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in the application or selection process, please inform Lane County Human Resources.  In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the County may provide reasonable accommodation to qualified applicants in our recruitment and selection process.  Our TDD phone number is 541/682-3952.
